Czechs Hold Last Meeting in Hall Sokol Tyrs Gymnastic unit members held their business meeting last night in Sokol Tyrs Hall at 3689 E. 131st Street. The 44-year-old hall, which has been the center of Czech Sokol activities since 1327, is being sold to the Boys Club of Cleveland, Inc. At last night's commemorative meeting, attended by about 100 members, Edwin J. Jirousek, discussed the history of the hall, which once had housed the old Mount Pleasant Theater.

Through much of Sokol Hall's existence, sek said, there was a continual struggle to pay off 1 the $50,000 mortgage. "During the depression there was a period when we almost lost the building. But we were able to refinance it," he said. THE SOKOL LEASED the theater to other interests, drawing a monthly rental. But with advent of television in the 1950s, Jirousek said, the theater had to be closed.

It was not until 1953 after a huge munity-wide bazaar, that the Sokol was at last able to pay off the mortgage. A In 1957 it was decided to convert the theater into A gymnasium. Raising nearly $36,000 through a multitude of activities and donations, the Sokol financed reconstruction and in 1958 rededicated the hall. From then on Sokol Iall was the focal point of Czech activities nightly gymnastic classes, weddings, parties, meetings and other social functions. It was decided to sell the hall in 1967, Jirousek said, because many Czechs were moving away to other neighborhoods.

The Sokol's 700 senior and juntor members will meet temporarily in Sokol land Hall in Warrensville Ileights until a new gym and social contor is built on Rockside Road in Valley Now. SOKOL MEANS FALCON. which is the symbol it organization founded in 1862 in Urn ve by Miroslav Tyrs, a teacher and writer. Ta last big event at the hall will be Saturday, the members celebrate a 'Night in Prague" at 3 p.m. I Crate Notice.
